when a solid shaft is subjected to tension its linear
dimension changes equaly as its lateral dimension, then what
will be its poissons ratio?

Answer Posted / mechatronics89

I agree with Pushkar. He has explained the concept of
poisson ratio clearly. But there is a corrction in the
formula. The poisson ratio is negative of what u have
written. It is
Poissons ratio= - Strain(lateral)/Strain(linear)

in most of cases, when strain in linear direction is +ve,
the strain in lateral is negative and so we get positive
poisson ratio.
