sometimes, in a column, reinforcement is provided equally on
2 sides and sometimes on 4 sides.what will be the difference
in the method of designing?

i think, in case of portal frames there is effect of sway
i.e.forces causing bending moment in horizontal direction
on column for this purpose reinforcement is provided in
only 2 sides of outer faces. such column is design for
axial compresiion as well as bending. but column those
carry heavy axial forces are design for pure compression
and reinforcement is provided in all 4 sides.
