what is automatic voltage regulator and it is used?

avr is an important component of an alternator or a
synhronous generator , normally with an alternator 2 more
generators are coupled on the same shaft , 1 is dc gen. or
dynamo & other is pmg or permanent magnet gen. , dynamo
provides supply to the rotor field windings of the main
alternator & the field windings of dynamo are excited by an
avr which maitains a constant current-frquency-voltage , in
the suply to dynamo field winding , through suitable solid
state devices , the avr gets it input supply from pmg &
then process it accordingly , thus overall an avr maintains
the output voltage of an alternator by regulating the field
excitation current , & thus regulating the reactive power.
