Tokens, often referred to as cryptocurrencies, serve as an incentive for miners to validate and add transactions to the blockchain. This is known as proof-of-work or proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. Miners compete to solve mathematical puzzles and the one who solves it first gets rewarded with tokens.
