The Lightning Network is a second-layer solution built on top of Bitcoin and other blockchains to increase transaction speed and reduce fees. It enables off-chain transactions between participating nodes, called payment channels, which can significantly improve scalability by reducing the need for each transaction to be recorded on the blockchain.
