Mycobacteria are acid-fast due to their unique cell wall composition containing high amounts of mycolic acids. When stained with common stains like methylene blue or carbol fuchsin, these acids prevent the stain from binding, making the bacteria appear red (or acid-fast) after treatment with decolorizing agents and counterstaining with an acid-alcohol solution.
