A potential transformer is a type of voltage transformer.
In other words, all potential transformers are voltage
transformers, but not all voltage transformers are
potential transformers.
All pts are inductive and connect directly to the primary
voltage. Some vts, such as cvts, connect to the primary
voltage through a capacitor, and are not inductive.
Both are generally used for the same function, to convert
the primary voltage to a smaller, readable secondary
voltage to be used for relaying, metering, or station
service.
