There have been many references to DHCP V4 Client/Server and
DHCP V6 Client and Server above and almost all are only part
correct as there is little if no reference to TCP AND UDP
Layers...
The two could not me more different...My best example is if
you open your network on TCP 514 you making ANY Shell script
accessible to everyone. If you open UDP 514 you are enabling
important syslog data stream to be analysed by a system
logger like Event Center
TCP/IP is a large number of groups that we abbreviate. In
all cases its not sufficient to list a Port Number without
specifying its UDP or TCP component...Lets leave all the
other components that make up the Group TCP/IP well alone
for the moment.
The two layers could not be any more dissimilar...the TCP
layer contains data that an Application Layer Gateway can
scan for actual data or code.
The UDP Layer carries no data in the sense that it only
controls comms ACK's Packets Lost, Comms Resets, Comms
redundancy, NOACK's Hardware comms data in binary or soon
hex values.
The best analogy I can offer you may help someone who's as
old as I...If we go back to Novell Netware’s IP Protocol of
IPX/SPX...The data can all comands were within the IPX Layer
and the SPX contained the comms controls likes
ACK/NOACK/RETRY/ and other comms control overheads that made
sure the IPX packet got to its destination.
Ask me anything or criticise me as well....;-)))))
