RIPng
Routing Information Protocol, Next Generation (RIPng) is a
version of the distance-vector routing protocol (RIP)
modified for use with IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6).
RIPng allows HP-UX servers to route IPv6 packets within a
medium-sized autonomous system (AS).

The following lists the characteristics of the RIPng
protocol:

Runs over User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

Uses the standard port number 521. Routers that use RIPng
listen on the multicast address FF02::9 and send their
update messages to this address.

Uses distance-vector algorithms to determine an optimal
route to a destination, using hop count (number of routers
between a source and destination network node) as the
metric (a measure for calculating the next host for routing
a packet). It selects the route with the least metric value
as the most preferred route to transmit packets. The metric
field contains a value between 1 and 15 as the current
metric, or hop count, for the destination. The value 16
indicates that the destination is not reachable, therefore,
it is not considered for routing. ramD does not consider
the route with metric value 16 as an invalid route.

Exchanges IPv6 reachability information with routers
sharing the common data link layer via route update
messages.

Operates within an Autonomous System (AS), which comprises
one or more routers or networks controlled by a common
network administrator.

Installs the best route in the routing table.

Functions in either split horizon or poison reverse mode.

Includes Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support.

Helps an IPv6 network understand IPv6 route information.

Conforms to the Internet Engineering Task Force-Request for
Comments 2080 (IETF-RFC 2080) RIPng for IPv6.
