neutral is used to prevent the device from faults.it 
reduces the over current flow.

There should be a return path for the current.In delta 
connected system there is no neutral.In star connected 
system you get 240v between phase and neutral.If any single 
phase appliance lost its neutral connection you will get 
full voltage while getting shock. Neutral work as a return 
path in electrical circuit.
