Update is used to add something new..whereas modify is used 
to change or correct the existing data..

UPDATE - is used for modifying the existing data and if 
there is no data in table then UPDATE command will add
new record into table.

MODIFY - is used for only modifying the existing data.

MODIFY - is used for modifying the existing data on the 
basis of primary key and if there is no data in table then 
UPDATE command will add new record into table.

UPDATE - is used for only modifying the existing data on 
the basis of primary key.

Update only used for updating existing record.If the record 
does not exist a new record is not created.

Modify is used for updating an existing record, if it is 
present and create a new record if none exist.
