No its not mandatory for software testing but for database
testing its mandatory

I think now a days, it is necessary to learn sql concepts..
NOw a days, most of the companies are asking SQL SERVER

I think now a days it's mandatory. Tester should know about 
SQL, because sometimes he/she need to use Database while 
testing specialy Web Applications...
SQL knowlegdge is a plus point for tester... :)

SQL knowledge is must, see if the presentation page (front 
end) is not working properly because of some java build 
problem, in that case u have to check it in DB using SQL.
