Question
Explain the advantage and disadvantage of ethernet ?

Answer
# 1
advantages:
1.Conceptually Simple :
Ethernet is simply daisy-chained together with
coax cable and "T" adapters. There are usually no hubs,
transcievers, or other devices used.

2.Relatively Inexpensive:
Due to the simplicity inherent in the design of Ethernet,
it can be an inexpensive technology to implement.

3.Noise Immunity :
The coaxial cable used in a Ethernet network is very well
shielded, and has a very high immunity from electrical
noise caused by outside sources.

Disadvantages:
1.Difficult To Change:
Reconfiguring a ethernet is somewhat difficult to do once
it is in place. Any changes to the network will result in
at least some "down time," as the bus must be broken and a
new section spliced in at the point of the break.

2.Fault Intolerant :
If any device or cable section attached to the network
fails, it will most likely make the entire network go down.

3.Difficult Troubleshooting
Ethernet networks are very difficult to troubleshoot. There
is no easy way to determine what node or cable section is
causing a problem, and the network must be troubleshot by
a "process of elimination." This can be very time consuming.

4.Specialized Cable
The RG-58A/U coaxial cable used in Ethernet networks can
not be used for any other purpose. In the event that the
network is changed to another type, then the cable will
have to be replaced.

First, an Ethernet is extremely easy to administer and
maintain. There is no switch that can fail,no router and
routing table to keep up to date.and easy to add a new host.

second it is very inexpensive.cable is cheap.only cost is
for network adopter

Advantages of Ethernet
Upgradability:
There are several other superfast network protocols. Some
of them must use Fiber optics and thus its price is much
greater than that of Ethernet. But some superfast networks,
such as 100G BaseT Ethernet, are based upon more affordable
technologies. Therefore, installing BaseT Ethernet may make
the upgrade to a faster network easier in the future.
Simplicity of installation:
In the past IBM Token Ring was a rival of Ethernet, but
like IBM's OS/2 lost the OS war to Microsoft Windows, Token
Ring also lost the network war. Although it was capable of
transmitting signals at 16 million bit per second, which
was faster than 10BaseT Ethernet (10 megabit per second),
it was very difficult to configure. Networking expert Frank
Derfler said, "The Token Ring is to networks what the
Boeing 747 is to airplanes. It makes strange noises and
requires special handling."
Installation of Ethernet is easier and less expensive than
other network protocols. It offers efficient ways to
connect across Mac, PC, Linux, Unix workstations, IBM
mainframe, and many other kinds of computer systems.
Therefore, Ethernet is more popular than other network
protocols.
Connectivity to backbone:
As mentioned before, Ethernet is a local area network
protocol for different sub-networks of a company or a
campus. For networking the entire company or campus, it
needs a backbone network protocol. A backbone network is
like a fish's backbone, to where every smaller bone (sub-
network) is connected. Ethernet has an advantage in
connectivity to backbone because other LAN protocols lag
behind in backbone innovations. For instance, the only way
to upgrade Token Ring backbone was to move to Asynchronous
Transfer Mode (ATM). In contrast, Ethernet have several
choices such as Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, and routing
switches.

ethernet is advantagous as the wires contain little
athletes running up and down the very small tubes taking
papers with information v fast, as opposed to USB cables
which contain small diesel trains powered and operated by
small mice with little or no knowledge of engines thus they
regulary break down, the main problem with ethernet is when
one of the athletes trip over and injure themselves, it can
prove difficult though not impossibel to get ambulances
into the cable

This is not so much of an answer as it is a comment. The
above two answers are obviously EXTREMELY out of date, and
therefore wrong, in the context of Ethernet networking in
2009. It is too bad that answers on this site do not have
time stamps of some sort!
