The words Check in and check out are used in configuration 
management tool like VSS.
check in is used to open the document to update the old 
version to new.
check out is used to keep the document where it is exactly.

1.Check in is used to update the older version to new one.
2.Check out is used to lock & edit the file.

Checkout:Getting the source to your working folder from the 
VSS.We can change or modify the source.
Checkin:Put the checkout source again into the VSS,so the 
others can get the modified source.

Checkin and check out are terms used when we are using 
versioncontroltool VSS
CHECK IN:By using this option we can store(upload) our 
documents in vss.This will provide security to our 
documents , authorised people can use these documents based 
on the permissions given to them.
CHECK OUT:This is used to collect(retrieve) a copy of the 
already stored document to our desired location.
Here  vss takes care of versions .
