To confirm the presence of Carbonyl carbon in a compound.  
       Compounds containing carbonyl carbon(s) gives orange,
yellow or red precipitate when shaken with a solution of 2,4
DNP in ethanol containing few drops of conc. H2SO4.

Addition compounds of aldehydes and ketones with 2.4 DNP 
are crystalline solids and have sharp melting point . 
hence they are used for identification of aldehydes and
ketones.
