another via a cable that links connecting ports.

Its nothing but logical address
that is 0 to 1023, these are resrved for servers
remaining 1024 to 65535 are clients

A port is a connector for attaching cables, for example: 
Parallel port is used for connecting printer with system 
and Serial port is used for connecting monitor with CPU.
