Why CT’s shall not be kept open?

When ct connected,that act as a stepup transformer so there will be produce a arc between the terminals of the secondary of CT.

when a CT in connected to the transformer is for the
current reading to know the amps folowing through the
conductor. we keep the terminal close because of the
secondary side voltage will be rise. thats why when we
remove the meter for the maintenance purpose we provided a
short link for close the terminals inorder to avoid high
voltage at secondary.

CT always connecting into the series position. If we have
some work on the Meter, we need to short the CT terminal. If
CT in open condition (it can't connected to the meter)its
step down the current in terms of 300/5AMP (for example).
After few second or minute it will drawn the more current at
infinite level at that time CT temperature also increase. If
we can't short the CT it will make big blast or sever
damage.
